Inever understood what truly excellent workout socks could do for overall performance until two years ago, when a pair of Agogo Active socks (the Wave style, to be exact) stumbled into my life, making me reconsider everything I thought I knew about this humble footwear accessory.
I cannot state this enough: My workouts, and my life all around, are better because of these socks. These green, turquoise, and gray superheroes are perfectly cushy and stretchy in all the right places. They have a blister-tab on the heel that keeps them in just the right position, an arch support cushion, and a hand-linked toe seam that supports but never squishes a single piggy. The sweat-wicking material is also clutch for my sweaty runs.
Dare I say it, they are a blister-proof hug for tired feet (which have carried me across multiple marathon finish lines and thousands of training miles).
The socks came to me by a stroke of serendipity. I remember it so clearly: I was counting down the hours until I would toe the line of the Chicago Marathon, sitting on my hotel room bed when these socks fell into my lap–literally. My mom tossed them there as a pre-race gift from the expo. They went straight into my suitcase, because nothing new on race day. It wasn’t until a week later that I unzipped the pouch and took the socks for a test run.
Did I know by looking at these two pieces of fabric that my life would never be the same? Nope, they’re socks. But I could tell right away that they weren’t like the multi-colored, no-show socks I’ve worn over the years–and worn out by just looking at the packaging.
That first run I went on with the Agogo Active socks was a short 3-miler, but boy was it an eye-opener. It was only a week or so after I’d PR-d the Chicago Marathon, yet my feet didn’t cry out in pain. Other muscles were tight and tentative, but my feet were coddled and content in the soft, cushy fabric of the socks. It was love at first workout. I had finally found my ride or die running socks.
It wasn’t until this spring, 18 months later, that I realized I might never find another pair like them. Tracking down the brand became my mission. The socks didn’t make it easy, with no brand name listed anywhere on the fabric. The only marking was a line of infinity symbols (or a set of interlocking o’s, depending on how you look at it) that didn’t ring a bell for me or any of my coworkers. Googling that got me nowhere, and neither did scouring the Chicago Marathon Expo exhibitor list or sharing photos of the socks with my running expert friends.
I didn’t give up, though. I kept digging and finally found the original plastic zip baggy and tag that had come with the socks (they were buried under a stack of meh pairs). I was thrilled to discover that Agogo Active is still churning out excellent workout socks in many colors and sizes. I did a full-on happy dance around my apartment to celebrate my successful detective work.
I used to save my Agogo Active Wave socks for 20-mile training runs, race days, and any time I know I’m in for pain and want a touch of relief and certainty. (After all, until very recently, I had one pair, so I couldn’t waste them on an everyday sweat sesh.)
Now that I’m armed with a backup pair and know how to order more, I don’t have to be quite so stingy. Sometimes, I pull them out on a whim to make a workout feel extra special. These socks are like popping a bottle of bubbly for my fitness routine.
It may sound like an over-exaggeration, but armed with this dynamic duo, I will never again worry about a surprise blister (not being hyperbolic!). My feet are happy and I’m free to focus on hitting those PRs and getting #WHstronger. I highly suggest you invest in your own pair (or two!).
